Default something interfering with my browser/google

Hi there

Hoping someone 'in the know' might be able to assist me here?

My daughter, looking at stuff on the internet, triggered an infection on our laptop.

It was one of those things that gives a fake virus scan then tries to direct you to a site selling 'antivirus software'.

Malwarebytes would not run, so I tried removing the infection by:

I found three .exe files that had been downloaded and removed them
I ran hijack this and removed all the registry entries that looked dodgy (to me)

I no longer get the dodgy pop up windows (hooray)

but ...

However, there are some residual problems:

- malwarebytes and avg will not run
- if I do a google search (for anything) then click on one of the results, I am directed to a dodgy site (not the site shown on the google results list)

What can I do now?

Thanks!

Quick fix rename MBAM at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam (usual location) to mbam.run which should allow you to run MBAM and see if this fixes the infection if not then follow the instructions here but please be patient, you wil get advice as soon as possible.

Hi there.

I did as you suggested, I found mbam.exe and renamed it mbam.run

But when I doubleclick the renamed file, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file ... needs to know what program created it ..."

How do I go about trying to run mbam.run?

Thank you!

PS, I have managed to run ad-aware, the only anti-virus package that seems to run at the moment, it informs me it found a trojan win32trojantdss, however it does not seem to be able to get rid of it.
