My CPU usage is extremely variable but tends to spends large amounts of time at 98%+. All processes show close to 0.
Can you tell me what is causing this? I include the log from HJackThis:

Default Re: High CPU Usage

Welcome to the Webuser Forum

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks for your assistance. It certainly seems to have found a lot of errors and there is now a asked improvement in performance. I have two logs, I wasn't sure which you wanted so have included both. The logs are not attached. When I tried to add the main log via the file attachment I got the following message: mbam-log-2011-12-23 (16-08-19).txt I also got a similar message for the second log

Sorry about the delay every time I tried to add the log it was too big and I didn't have winzip. I have just been recommended to download 7zip.

It did find and remove a lot

to make sure we have got everything we better run combofix.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I clicked on combofix and it came down as PCPerformer. I scanned with that and it gave me 2116 system related errors, 350 comm and activeX errors, 475 user related errors, and 916 startup and uninstall errors. I didn't have a log file however but I assume the results were stored in a file RSPscanlog.xml log_12-2-2011 both of which are invalid files so I've zipped them up the xml file as the log is unreadable and will send this.

File Type: zip RCPscanlog.zip (55.0 KB, 2 views)

it shouldn't have come down as pc performer.
there is still something wrong, i think your hosts file has been hijacked.

Download the HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
  • Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert 3.7 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Then :-

DO NOT reboot, download and run combofix.
