Default Yahoo scans emails for data to sell to advertisers

This seems to be in the US, but I suppose it could spread! You won't be able to read the whole WSJ story unless you can sign in, but you'll get the idea:

Yahoo, Bucking Industry, Scans Emails for Data to Sell Advertisers - WSJ

Briefing: Yahoo Scans User Emails to Sell Data to Advertisers — The Information

TBH I assumed they all did that, I am sure Google does.

I know they all do it. I'm a boater and I get "targeted adverts" for boaty stuff all the time.

Scammers every last one of them but the only cure is to not use the internet and that aint gonna happen just yet. I keep my adblockers going in spite of the bullying and those web sites that do bully I don't use again.

It's a very long time since I've seen any ads in any of my webmail programs, possibly because I use Webmail Ad Blocker which stops them.

For Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi:

Webmail Ad Blocker - Chrome Web Store

For Firefox:

Webmail Ad Blocker – Add-ons for Firefox

An older version from the Firefox site will work in Pale Moon.

This article is from Sophos' Naked Security:

Why Yahoo scanning user email is no cause for panic – Naked Security
Quote:
However, Yahoo’s interest in commercial email sniffing has been on the table since Verizon subsidiary Oath updated the service’s privacy policy in April. When users logged in for the first time a few weeks later, after the updates took effect, they were clearly informed that:
Oath will also provide personalised ads to you on our partners’ products and analyse your communications, like emails, to tailor content and ads you see. […]

When you let our partners use cookies to collect similar data that we do on our sites, they can provide ads on our sites that they think match your interests, like deals related to products you love, and measure, report and analyse your interactions with them.

I don't use either iOS or iCloud Crocket, but have a look a the following articles to see if there's anything helpful there:
