Default Chair Mats

Does anybody use chair mats for their computer chairs that protect carpets ?

I've got a chair on wheels/castors and my 2nd chair mat is done. The current one has lasted about 2 years and is now cracking up quite badly.

I got it on ebay for between 20 and 30 quid. Is this the life expectancy for these things ? They are supposed to be "for life" and I don't expect that for a moment.

I have seen the damage done to carpets if you DONT use these, and that is a no brainer.

Any carpet shop could give you an offcut. There were at least 10 sq m left over when we had some laid last month. Use them upside down for freer movement. You could even get some used carpet that the fitter has removed to lay new.

Otherwise, look at doormats which are cheaper than dedicated chair mats, or again get an offcut from the type that is inset into a mat well. They are rubberised on the under side.

A decent doormat is a good shout

Remember to lift it now and again so the lack of sunlight doesn't discolour it from the rest though.

Does anyone use decent lino for instance ???

I got a plastic chair mat from Viking - has lasted a few years without signs of wear.

I bought the chair mat years ago, so cannot remember any details or what it cost.

I've been using a Masonite chair mat for about 12 years now.

Costco sell a tough one, advantage is they have a no quibble returns policy, regardless of time.
