Take it back.

That message is the way Windows sees things.

When a device is disabled in Device Manager, it will still be listed but will have a black downward pointing arrow next to it.

If it is a driver problem or anything else, it will still be listed but have a yellow alert next to it.

As it no longer appears in Device Manager then it isn't powered up.

Repair shops usually have bits and pieces laying around so it may not have been a new wireless adapter that was fitted.

I think you are correct in saying it probably wasn't new.

I did have a power cable issue since repair but it must have been a loose wire as it seems okay now. I have not got round to getting new charger cable. I don't suppose that would have effected it as has not kept recharging for the last week. Not had time to do anything as had visitors.

The power jack can sometimes go on laptops but from the sound of things - whoever did the replacement for you doesn't have seemed to have done a very good job.

I'd mention the charging problem you experienced after the repair as it may have been related to the way he had put things back.

I took laptop in and it was not the same guy who did the original repair but got the wireless connection restored by putting in another card. He was mystified as to what was the cause and said if it goes again it must be something to do with the 'board' which to me doesn't sound very hopeful. I'll wait and see and maybe contact another company and ask advice.

Hopefully this one will work okay and long.

Did you mention the charging problem you experienced immediately after the last repair ?

Unfortunately it was a different guy (there are 2) and he hadn't worked on the machine. The other one does most of the repairs as he is the more knowledgable of the 2 (his admission not mine!). I mentioned it but he couldn't really comment. If I have more problems I'll make sure I speak to the right one. He did say he had never come across the problem before.

I don't know why but I am wary when I switch on the laptop and wonder if it has much life left in it.

Thanks for your advice!

I think I'd find another repair shop if you have any more problems that we can't help with.
