Default Amazon: Alexa Echo sent recorded conversation in "unlikely" string of events

From Quartz
Quote:
Amazon confirmed an Echo mishap. It admitted that its personal assistant device had recorded an Oregon family’s private conversation and sent it to an acquaintance in Seattle, unbeknownst to them. Citing an unlikely string of events involving misinterpreted words, it vowed to tweak the system so that a repeat incident was even more unlikely.

This has been reported on ESET's WeLiveSecurity site too:

Amazon Alexa Echo shared private conversation, claim married couple
Quote:
It's every Amazon Alexa owner's worst nightmare - your private conversations not just being listened to, but shared with random contacts without your knowledge.

I don’t have an voice-activated assistant in my home.

Call me paranoid if you like, but I just don’t like the idea of some internet-enabled gadget always “listening” to what’s being said, waiting to hear if it’s being given a voice command. By my reckoning I’ve survived just fine for forty-cough years without a voice-activated assistant, so I’ll probably be just fine without one.

I like this article from The Register:

You know that silly fear about Alexa recording everything and leaking it online? It just happened • The Register
Quote:
US pair's private chat sent to coworker by AI bug

Updated It's time to break out your "Alexa, I Told You So" banners – because a Portland, Oregon, couple received a phone call from one of the husband's employees earlier this month, telling them she had just received a recording of them talking privately in their home.

"Unplug your Alexa devices right now," the staffer told the couple, who did not wish to be fully identified, "you're being hacked."

At first the couple thought it might be a hoax call. However, the employee – over a hundred miles away in Seattle – confirmed the leak by revealing the pair had just been talking about their hardwood floors.

It will be time to worry if that actually happens! For now at least, giving Alexa houseroom is voluntary!

On a less serious note, I thought this latest version was funny.
