Default view laptop screen on tv screen using HDMI

Am trying to view my laptop screen on TV screen using HDMI cable but have not succeeded. Laptop using Win10. Nothing happens.
Also, is it possible to view the iPad screen on a TV without spending money?

I would check the TV menu to ensure the correct input mode is selected (HDMI 1, HDMI 2 etc) before anything else.

Tonight I noticed there was another HDM socket on the side of the TV!
Plugging into this solved the problem.
Only problem is not getting any sound from TV when itís connected to pc, despite having sound turned fully up on both.
Thank you both. Extractor.

My HDMI connection is activated on all the HDMI sockets by using the Source button on the Remote. As to the no sound issue I think like me your TV won't respond on certain sockets I have my Freesat box plugged into HDMI #2 on the Smart TV but on my older non smart TV my devices work best On HDMI #1. Clear case of try it and see what works Best?
If still no sound then swap to a known working HDMI cable making sure the plugs are fully pushed in securely!

Peru and Bedstor, Thank you for replies.
Downloading the link supplied I found the PC/TV sound link disabled and corrected that. That was all that was wrong. (Just don't use the laptop much so as it came with Win 10 I need to learn more about that operating system).
