Default What is Cloudflare ?

Good Afternoon All

On booting up our Win7 laptop for the first time today a box appeared with about 4 alternatives for something called *.cloudflare-dns.com

Please can you tell me what this is and is it dangerous/useful/desirable or essential?

At the same time the Avira security showed that it needed updating ('umbrella' was down) - could this have been involved or was it just a coincidence?

I updated Avira and all seems to work OK and no more sign of the 'cloudflare 'box.

I did google cloudfare but to be honest the replies may as well have been in Chinese as I didn't understand a word !!

Regards

Roy

Looks like it might have something to do with this

Cloudflare launches 1.1.1.1 DNS service that will speed up your internet

but if you didn't change your DNS server then it's a bit of a mystery

There are other sites too:

1.1.1.1 — the Internet’s Fastest, Privacy-First DNS Resolver

Cloudflare - The Web Performance & Security Company | Cloudflare

All the same, it's odd that it turned up on your PC out of the blue, so to speak!

A bit more about Cloudflare in the following articles from ZDNetand TheRegister:

Cloudflare touts privacy-friendly 1.1.1.1 public DNS service. Hmm, let's take a closer look at that • The Register

Updated Cloudflare has revealed a deal with regional internet registry APNIC to provide a possibly more privacy-conscious DNS resolver at a prestige network address, 1.1.1.1.
I don't think it's harmful!

Many thanks for all the information.

I wonder if anyone else on the Forum has changed to this?

I have - just now.
However, I have to say I cannot notice any difference between this DNS and my usual DNS which is Comodo`s Secure DNS service, information for which can be found at https://www.comodo.com/secure-dns/.

I have used Comodo`s DNS service for years and had no problems so, no doubt, will change back to them.

I get my broadband from BT via their supplied router.

Does this mean I use their own DNS service and if I wanted to change would it mean notifying or otherwise involving them ?

I don't think you have to notify your ISP, just change your DNS settings. You can tell if you're using specific settings if you go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center>Change adapter settings, right-click on Wireless Network Connection, click on Properties. Under 'Networking' click on Internet Protocol Version 4>Properties where 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' will be checked if you haven't previously set it otherwise.

Not at all.

If you want to change your DNS server address click the radio spot next to Use the following DNS server addresses, enter the values for the server you want, click OK and you will be connected via the server of your choice.
