Default C.A. Magazine issue 522, Registry tweaks

Although I don't use Windows on-line any more, I do like to dig into it.....In the article mentioned, item 14, tells us how to remove those ugly arrows on desktop shortcuts.....Well, I tried it three times but the result was, yes, the arrows were all gone, but all the shortcut images were almost completely covered with a white square.....I wonder if anyone has tried it successfully.

I think it's best to leave registry tweaks alone - or at least create a restore point before making any changes.

I have used a couple of registry tweaks in Win 10 however, but those were to disable Cortana and add Take Ownership to the right click context menu.

WinAero Tweaker: https://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.1836

The ‘shortcut’ text in image No4 still shows in the icon name. When the option to disable the ‘shortcut’ text is used in the Tweaker, every shortcut created thereafter has the text removed.

Personally I don`t see a problem with the small arrow on desktop shortcuts. They are quite small anyway and let me know which are shortcuts whereas other items on my desktop do not have them.

Another program you could try is 'Ultimate Windows Tweaker'. There's a different version depending on which Windows OS you run and it's similar to Winaero Tweaker.

Ultimate Windows Tweaker v 2.2, a Tweak UI for Windows 7 & Vista

Since I don't have my desktop icons showing, I'm not bothered by the little arrows. Another thing you could consider is hiding the icons by right-clicking the desktop, going to View where you can untick 'Show desktop icons and then enabling the Desktop Toolbar instead. To do this, right-click on the taskbar, go to Toolbars>Desktop and tick the latter; you'll get Desktop showing on the taskbar and if you click the double chevron » next to it, a list of everything on your desktop will pop up and you can click whichever one you want to access ~ none of them has a little arrow!

Thanks for the info folks....I know the arrows aren't intrusive, but I like to fiddle around, mainly to overcome MS telling us what we can and can't do with our own devices. And if I screw things up by experimenting, well, I have my W10 clone disk at hand.

Alternatively, you could make a restore point before experimenting! If you want to try Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 for Windows 10:

Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 for Windows 10

this is what you'd need to look for in the program:

==================
A long time ago, when I used XP, I wanted to get rid of the little arrows on shortcuts too. Back then, I got TweakUI which was one of Microsoft's 'Power Toys' and I was able to get rid of the arrows using that program as described in Method 2 here:

Remove or modify the arrow used on shortcuts

Despite the warning, I still chose None!
