Default Transcend Memory Cards

Good Afternoon All

My wife has just got two new Transcend memory cards to use in her Canon Legria FS200 camcorder.

Details are:- 4GB SDHC Speed 10.

On doing the primary initialisations of the cards a message appears saying:-

"May not be possible to record movies on this card"

This also appears on each subsequent insertion of the cards.

The strange thing is that it IS possible to record onto the card and play back the content on the camera!!

Is this anything to worry about or does it need some action and if so what?

Any ideas please.

Regards

Roy

Just a guess – If you can record with the default setting at SP (Standard Play), it may be that it can’t record at the other options that are available and the camera is warning you of this.
Try the other modes out as comparison.

The Speed Class 10 became standardized after camcorders were released, and movies cannot be recorded on the Class 10 SDHC cards when certain modes are opted for.
Changing to a lower class (4 or 6) may help.

I’m sure if you took the camera down to a local supplier of such devices, they would try different class cards for you to see if there is a difference in either the ‘warning’ and/or the modes that can be used if another mode cannot record with the class 10 card.

Hello Moonshine

Many thanks for your prompt reply and for looking into this in such detail for me.

I think we have some older cards of less speed rating somewhere so will be able to do a comparison with them as you suggest.

Will try recording on other options as well and let you know how we get on.

Best regards

Roy

Hello Moonshine

I have now done some tests with the memory cards as you suggested and all results are good in terms of effects obtained but without shedding any real light on why the warning message appears.

Testing with Speed Classes 4 and 6 records in all modes. No warning messages show.

Testing with Speed Class 10 also records - and plays back - on the Camcorder quite satisfactorily.

As a final check I burnt the results to a new DVD formatted to Video Mode on our Sony DVD Recorder and all was successful there as well.

This has always been our normal procedure with recordings and so nothing seems to have changed even with the new warning message.

Thanks again for your interest and help - much appreciated.

Best regards

Roy
