Default Sony Vaioshell has stopped working

For the last week I have been trying to use Vaiocare for my laptop's performance, security system settings and messages. I keep getting the same error message:

Vaioshell has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I haven't been able to find out what the prob is and I did search the error but it seems the only solution is a system restore - can I try anything else pls.

Tom, Thanks but I had looked at that and as it was dated 2013 I did wonder if it would still be up-to-date or wouldn't that matter?.

Yes, I saw it was an oldish article but the later posts were from 2015.

On Page 2 clicking on the model homepage hyperlink gives you a download page which when changing to Win 8.1 and then the file dropdown will give you the Vaio Care download for 22nd Sept 2016 which I assume to be the latest version.

You can go that route but this is where it takes you - https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model...d#/downloadTab

Thanks Tom, tried to do a system restore and it could not access a file because there was probably an anti-virus running. I think I will disable malwarebytes as I had previously had probs with update. BTW do you think there could be some sort of a conflict with the vaio software and the anti-virus?

Both MBAM and AV programs have been proven to be glitchy at times.

Boot up into the recovery environment and try the restore point option from there.

I've had restore point failure both in normal and safe mode in Win 10 and that is the way I restore if/when I need to.

When you try the restore point option, check the box to scan for affected programs before proceeding with it and then you'll see what has been installed since.

If it's either MBAM or your AV program conflicting, then the same could happen again when their Definitions are updated.

While that article was originally from 2013 the majority of the complaints at the time followed a particular Vaioshell update.

Had you downloaded anything immediately prior to Vaioshell not working, as conflicts can be caused by other programs.

Post hung - didn't time it.

Tom, the last vaio updates installed were in 2016. I am not able to find the updates on the Sony site for either my laptop model\product as they aren't listed. I did another system restore to an earlier date, when I did not have a prob with vaiocare to see if that would sort out the vaioshell prob but still getting the same error message.

I'm getting a different web page for my link now.

Previously you only needed to use the dropdown for the OS to select the download.

Are you still using Win 8.1 x64 bit or have you upgraded to Win 10 ?

What is your model number - I'll have a Google to see if I can find specific info for it.

There's this help article but I don't know what recovery disk it is referring to or if your machine is listed among the applicable products - https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answer...pped%20working

Tom, I never received a recovery disk with my laptop (and I wouldn't think of uninstalling the Vaio softwear because I wouldn't be able to re-install it). The model no is SVF153B1YM and sometimes they ask for the product name SVF1532C4E. They say on their website that altho they are no longer producing Vaio they are still providing support - but I don't seem able to access it. Still using Win 8.1 x64 bit and I haven't upgraded to Win 10 ? Thanks for your help Tom.

With Toshibas you get the option to create a recovery disk which is basically a copy of what is in the recovery partition.

I don't know Win 8.1 or Sony computers but on a Toshiba Win 7 when you go to the page to create a system image, that is where the option is and you can only do it once.

If you don't have that option then you could contact Sony either for advice or to see if they will supply you with a recovery disk.

I bought one each for two of my Toshibas - a disk which cost about 30 and an USB which cost about 40

However, it would seem that the model listed in this article is also known as your model - the back button may work for you to confirm, but it would appear to have the downloads you are looking for, although I haven't tried them.

If it doesn't list all of the downloads then hit the Load More button.

https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/s...m=35#downloads

I need to shoot of now for a while but will be back later to see if they are any good.
