Default What on earth?

I turned on my Windows 7 laptop, and after signing in the normal message of'welcome' didn't appear. Instead there was a message 'preparing your desktop.' When the desktop appeared, some, though not all, of the software I've installed, had disappeared. All my docs and pictures had gone. I used system restore, and now all software and files are present. When I came to the forums I had to sign in, and there was a message 'login not secure'. And, there's a message at top, I don't think it's from WU, saying, 'your extension was disabled because it is corrupted. Go to the extension manager to repair it.'
What happened?

According to Opera, the corrupted extension is Ghostery. That updated yesterday, so I'm wondering if there's a bug in it. Not sure if I should go for the repair option, delete Ghostery, contact them, or what.

We had that happen on one of the accounts on a laptop. Eventually, we had to create another account and ultimately reinstall Windows 7, but hopefully it won't come to that in your case. For us it was just part of the problem, we'd run sfc /scannow which found a lot of bad files, some of which it couldn't repair, so we reinstalled.

We've had no trouble in Opera with the latest version of Ghostery, but it might be worth uninstalling and reinstalling it. Regarding the 'login not secure' message here, have a look in the 'Feedback' forum. There's a current thread about this there and you don't need to worry about it!

You'll find a lot about the 'preparing your desktop' message if you do a search, but I wouldn't be able to give a definite resolution to the issue. What it says in this little video may be worth a try - but only after you've backed up your registry:

Thanks Madeline. I think the 'login insecure' thread you mean I found. Good to know that's of no concern. I think I'll contact Ghostery, see if any others have found a problem with it.

I'd be interested to know how you get on Jon98. I've had no problems with the latest version of Ghostery in Opera - as far as I can tell, it's working normally.

I forgot to post this earlier - you may find the feedback interesting:
