Default Something Happened Whist I Was Out

I was out all day today, took the wife to Bickleigh Mill in Devon for a day out, lunch and a little (4 miles) walk.

I started my computer first thing this morning, but did not actually use it until I got home about 6.30pm. It was still switched on, but when I opened it up, something seemed queer, all my previously installed updates had disappeared, and according to the computer, I had never checked for updates, which I know is untrue. Update History was blank, but Installed Updates showed masses of updates going back several years, the latest of which was 11/04/2018; and I know I updated on 17 April 2018.

So, what has happened? All seems to be working OK, but I can only assume that Microsoft or someone got into my computer during the day. Any ideas, please?

PS Malwarebytes scan shows no problems.

Obviously a complete mystery, almost seems like a complete reset/reinstall.

Go Start - type reliability and press enter when View reliability history comes up.

If the 19th has an info or red cross for it, click on it and info will appear in the lower pane.

Clicking on tech info will bring up more info at the top.

Other than that, I haven't a clue as to what has happened.

Exclamation Re: Something Happened Whist I Was Out

Nothing on 19th but "!" on 17th - unsuccessful driver installation. Can't think what this is though.

It certainly sounds as if Windows Update has somehow reset itself for some unknown reason. At least most of oyur updates exist, even if they don't show up in 'View update history'. My most recent updates were on 11/04/18 which were the 'Patch Tuesday' offerings. What happens if you try to check for updates? Does it work or do you get some kind of error message?

It's not the same thing, but you may find something useful in this thread:

Win 10 seems to be constantly installing miscellaneous drivers for one thing and another, neither of which appear in Installed Updates or Update history.

I'd check to see if your restore points go back to before your update history took a walkies.

If you find one, check the box to Scan for affected programs to see what may have been installed.

Searching for Windows Updates seems to work OK, although I have automatic updates switched off and manually check every now and then and it always seems to find something or other.

I did a system restore to 17th but still had the same problem, it seems everything after the 11th was removed. It is still a mystery, but one I am not going to worry about anymore.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

On our Windows 7 PCs, there have been no updates since 11th April. I think you're right not to worry about it ~ wait until the next Patch Tuesday on 8th May and see if you get the updates which will be available then without any trouble.

Being as MS now over ride the settings even if you have switched off updates (ie in w7) and can now download and install any update they decide is "critical" just as long as the machine is running, may well have something to do with the changes; its hardly the first time an update has wiped the record of updates.
