Default No Windows 8 Drivers for Sony Camcorder

I bought adobe elements 11 to use to capture and use of my home videos from Hi8 tapes.

My new laptop runs windows 8 and during my call with Sony today they confirm that my camcorder doesn't support drivers past XP. They tell me that the only option is if my computer has a firewire connection (the camcorder does) or to send the film off to someone that processes these onto DVDs.

Is there any other way to achieve this?

All suggestions welcome

Does your Laptop have an Express Card slot? If so, a Firewire card such as this one might solve the problem.

Thanks Mike but sadly no. Just the normal USB HDMI and ethernet slots.
