Thumbs up **Free Protection for your Computer**

Protect Your Computer For Free!!

Protecting your computer doesn't have to be an ongoing expense these days. There is more than enough quality protection available for free if you know where to find it. That's right, zilch, zero, gratis.

From the list below, choose one anti-virus program and one firewall (any more than one of each may cause conflicts and performance issues). Then take any number of privacy and anti-spyware/trojan programs.

Free Anti-Virus Software
Free Anti-Rootkit Tools
Free Firewall Software
Free Anti-Spyware Software

Free Spyware Prevention Software

Free Privacy Protection Software

Free Online Virus & Spyware Scans

Free Single File Scanners

Only use one firewall and one anti-virus programme otherwise there will be a conflict.

I've recently come across more than one person using both the free Avast and MSE without conflict and can only assume it's because Avast doesn't have its own firewall like other AV programs have, which is the cause of the conflict and why normally you can't run two AV programs.

I'm not sure where this would fit, perhaps Privacy Protection, but AdwCleaner is a good one to have:

This excellent list is little out of date. Here are some updates for consideration:

Bit Defender Free Edition at that link no longer exists. Need new link for current version.
Comodo Anti-virus + Firewall link has a lot of extra characters in it. Tidy up.
PC Tools Free Anti-virus was taken over by Symantec. Product not available.

Rootkit Revealer - can't see it in the list of products at the link.
IceSword's Anti-Rootkit - English Version - last updated 2007.
DarkSpy's Anti-Rootkit - last updated 2006.
Sophos Anti-Rootkit link now points to the free Virus Removal Tool.
AVG Anti-Rootkit no longer exist at AVG site.
Kaspersky TDSSKiller can be added here.

PrevX Free joined forces with Webroot and known as Webroot SecureAnywhere. Not applicable.

Spyware Guard at moment not temporarily available.
IE Spyad last updated 2009.
MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit could be added in this section.

Trojan Remover http://www.simplysup.com "Trojan Remover aids in the removal of Malware - Trojan Horses, Worms, Adware, Spyware" could be added under Anti-Malware scanners?

I installed Avast on my computer and it didn't do the job! I had to reinstall the system. I lost my pictures and documents. I totally don't recommend it.
