Which AV program did you have prior to Avast and did you use its uninstaller to get rid of all of its bits ?

I don't think Avast would cause such problems and you should look elsewhere perhaps.

Joe.

Avast did put out an update that caused fairly large problems on Vista systems...

I'm sorry to hear of your trouble with Avast johnydblack and this is too late to help now, but I suggest that you back up regularly in future to avoid such a disaster from ever happening again! You may find the 2 'sticky' threads about 'Image Backups' at the top of the following forum useful:

I installed Kaspersky Free version but the system went slow. Bitdefender free is running great but it does not automatically starts on windows startup. Any idea why?

I also noticed that problem when I tried Bitdefender Free, so dumped it.

I was looking for an alternative to my Norton Security for when its licence expired.

I decided to stay with Norton Security.

I didn't know Kaspersky had a free version.

If you want to stick with Bitdefender then you could register on their form and open a thread in the Home & Home Office section and ask in there.

https://forum.bitdefender.com/

As this doesn't just affect you, then someone else may have posted about it and hopefully there will be a workaround.

Download Free Antivirus Software | Kaspersky Lab UK

It may not slow down all PCs!

I think these days anti virus programs switch off MSE or Windows defender as it is now known. They don't do that in earlier versions of Windows.

I have only ever used MSE and Window's firewall. Everything else I have tried just gets annoying constantly telling me it's done this or done that or I need to do this or that. Also AV like Norton or Avast virtually take over the computer. I want my AV and AM to work constantly and quietly in the back ground. Having said that I am finding that Windows Defender has started telling me it has run a scan and found nothing. I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW MICROSOFT, just get on with it.
