Default How to find and remove duplicate files and photos on your PC

This info come from BT Tech & Gadgets>Computing:

How to find and remove duplicate files and photos on your PC | BT
Quote:
Free software makes it easy to track down unwanted duplicates of documents and photos, even if they’re not 100% identical.

Unless you’re ultra-scrupulous in the way you use your PC, there’s every chance that it contains duplicate data. It’s all too easy to copy a file twice from a USB flash drive or digital camera, or open one and inadvertently save it under a different name without making any changes.

Multiple copies of multiple files not only wastes disk space (though that’s hardly an issue these days), but it also makes file management difficult. After all, how can you be sure which photo of your aunt Freda is the best one to print when you have seven copies of it?
I haven't tried this, so I can't recommend it personally, but I've seen stuff by Julian Prokaza in various PC mags over the years, so hopefully there's nothing dodgy about the software he suggests using!

Ccleaner has a duplicate file finder.

I think a lot of programs do. I've never heard of dupeGuru before and thought that people might like to check it out. One thing to be aware of is that in the article it says
Quote:
Be sure to use the correct version for your operating system, including 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows
I noticed on the site that the download seems to be for 64-bit Windows.

Please don't be offended amason51, but are you sure you downloaded the right version? I downloaded it and installed it without any trouble at all, although I haven't run a scan yet. I think it needs to be on a 64-bit PC judging by the fact that is says "Windows (x64)" on the download site here:

dupeGuru |*finds duplicate files

The latest version is 4.0.3, not 3.9.1 as shown in the BT article, so perhaps that's why it says Windows (x64) ~ they've dumped the 32-bit version!

If anyone is interested, the 32-Bit option is shown depending on what URL is used.
If the URL that is shown in the BT page is used: www.hardcoded.net/dupeguru
. . . . then both 32 & 64-Bit options are visible.
Readers are warned: This website has moved. I don't maintain dupeGuru anymore. Andrew Senetar does and dupeGuru's now homepage is https://dupeguru.voltaicideas.net/

If the URL that is shown in the BT page is ‘clicked’, the page is redirected to: https://dupeguru.voltaicideas.net/

. . . . where only the 64-Bit version is visible.
Perhaps the new 'maintainer' has decided the 32-Bit version isn't a viable option to update etc and has permanently removed the version.

I'm interested to read this. From The BT article, I was expecting to see the page as shown there, whereas I got this

as shown in your screen shot because I clicked the link on the BT page. If I try the program and like it, it's nice to know that I can get the correct version for our 32-bit laptop.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is the case. Our laptop's getting on a bit now, but presumably some 32-bit computers are still made?

Thinking about it, I'm not all that much impressed with BT for printing the article without giving both links, or with Julian Prokaza for allowing it to happen. When I hovered my mouse pointer over the link, I saw that the URL was different from the one printed in the article, but as it was still for "dupeGuru...", I clicked on it - maybe rashly - and assumed that the site had been updated since the version shown via the link is 4.0.3, rather than 3.9.1 as in the BT article. It now shows "Last updated: 11 June 2018 - 7.45am". I can't see how it's changed since my original post on 5th June. I think it may have been Julian Prokaza's page which was updated earlier today, not the article, so it's a bit confusing.

Author Bio - Julian Prokaza
