Default Tablet for travelling abroad

Good Afternoon All

My wife and I don't have smartphones and just use a desktop and laptop at home.

Just wondering about the possibilities available for a small/inexpensive tablet for use abroad in Canada and New Zealand.

Want something which will give internet access (to check routes/road closures etc.) and also allow retrieval of e-mails from web accounts - bt and outlook.

Would very much appreciate suggestions and recommendations for something along those lines.

Regards

Roy

Daddybear,

This link may help you. Remember that the capped roaming charges are only in the EU countries. Why not invest in a cheap mobile that you use for just holidays and you can come to some arrangement with your service provider in regard to data charges which may be expensive in the areas you have named.

I have an old Hudl that I take to Spain but all my stuff is downloaded at home before I go and I don't use it for the same useage as you want to cover, so cannot help you there. I'm sure someone more travelled than I will know.

Try old faithful Martin's tip.

Global Sims
Here you use a specialist multi-country Sim card. While not as cheap as a local card, you only need to buy it once, and keep the same UK number wherever you are, making it more convenient (see Cheap International Sims).

The cost of calls, texts and data is different depending on the country you're in, so always double-check the price first.

This is well worth a read through by all. I picked up a lot of useful stuff regarding the EU as that is mostly where I go.

You would need tablet with sim if you need live internet i go to Australia for 3 months every year and use my Amazon fire on wi fi to check e-mail and browse the web and have free map apps and download them to tablet before i go i use Navmii and it works fine, there is also Waze which has good maps these days there are plenty of hotspots available and dont forget you can also make internet phone calls on wi-fi.

Amazon Fire is the cheapest option and take the advice and use a local SIM card or Martin Money Savers advice (as fossewayfella says)
to avoid UK ridiculous roaming charges, which can be many pounds per minute.

Many thanks to all for your advice and help.

Have decided to go down the Amazon Fire route and will definitely follow your suggestions regarding Sims and roaming charges.

Best regards

Roy

Glad to have been of some help daddybear. Have a great time in New Zealand. Haven't been there but my friend did a sponsored cycle ride from the top of the North Island to bottom of the South Island and he said it was fantastic scenery, etc. I must say their white wine, is most delicious.

Tablet or Mobile????

What are we discussing. If it's got a SIM card beware for Canada. As far as I am aware they use the same frequency as the US and that is different to Europe.

But if you are just going to use it for the Internet (as per your OP) then OK but if you are thinking of doubling up as a cell phone or using a tablet on mobile data you need to do some checking.

jak - thanks for the further info. - it is a tablet planned.

We really just want the facility to access the internet whilst travelling, but the assistant at Currys has told us about a "dongle" type of thing which will add some ?4G to the tablet.

At first sight it seems a bit above our pay grade but we will look into it nearer the time and see if there are any deals available on a short term basis to introduce that refinement - we shall see.

I still think that a tablet will give you a wacking big data bill at the end of your journey.
