Default Cambridge Analytica is shutting down

From BBC Business News:

Cambridge Analytica: Facebook data-harvest firm to shut - BBC News
Quote:
Cambridge Analytica, the political consultancy at the centre of the Facebook data-sharing scandal, is shutting down.

The firm was accused of improperly obtaining personal information on behalf of political clients.

According to Facebook, data about up to 87 million of its members was harvested by a quiz app and then passed on to the political consultancy.

The social network said its own probe into the matter would continue.

"This doesn't change our commitment and determination to understand exactly what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again," said a spokesman.

"We are continuing with our investigation in cooperation with the relevant authorities."
From The Register:

From BBC News Technology:

MPs summon ex-Cambridge Analytica boss Alexander Nix - BBC News
Quote:
MPs looking into fake news have issued a formal summons to both ex-Cambridge Analytica boss Alexander Nix and Dominic Cummings, former campaign director of Vote Leave.

They will appear before the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee,

They had each said that they could not appear while investigations by the Information Commissioner's Office and the Electoral Commission were ongoing.

But both bodies confirmed appearing would not hinder their inquiries.

A report from The Register:

You're toxic, I'm slippin' under: SCL, Cambridge Analytica file for US bankruptcy The Register
Quote:
Oops!... We did it again

The US branches of Cambridge Analytica and its parent firm SCL have filed for bankruptcy as execs inch closer to ridding themselves of the toxic brand.

The filings, submitted to the New York Southern Bankruptcy Court late yesterday, are for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy akin to liquidation in the UK which allows the debtor to escape without having to file a repayment plan.

The demise of this webbery of (alleged) data manipulation together with the new data protection regulations which come into effect on 25th May will, I fear give people false sense of security. You only have to read the so called "transparency" of data collection policies which are flashed before our eyes from various directions to realize their clever use of language. And few will read it anyway.

Unfortunately that's true. I've posted about GDPR elsewhere on this site here:

and here:

I'm not sure that it was worth the effort!
