Default Bing Is Pushing Malware When You Search for Chrome

This report is from How-To Geek:

Bing Is Pushing Malware When You Search for Chrome
Quote:
You launch Edge on your new PC, search for “download Chrome,” and click the first result headed to “google.com” on Bing. You’re now on a phishing website pushing malware, disguised to look like the Chrome download page.

The latest news from ZDNet about this issue:

Microsoft removes fake Bing ad that looked like a Chrome download site | ZDNet
Quote:
After user reports, Microsoft has pulled a fake Bing ad that was serving up deceptive content to those seeking to download Google Chrome.

Microsoft's Bing search engine last week was serving to some users a fake Google Chrome download ad that may have included malicious content. After receiving user reports about the ad, Microsoft pulled it. But this may not be the first time Bing and Microsoft's Edge browser failed to block this kind of scammy Chrome-download ad.

From Graham Cluley on Bitdefender's HOTforSecurity site:

Search for Chrome on Bing, and you might get a nasty surprise – HOTforSecurity

It’s 2018, and you can still end up with your computer compromised by searching for the world’s most popular browser.

That fact was brought home once again by Twitter user Gabriel Landau who, immediately upon firing up his brand new Windows 10 laptop and trying to download Google Chrome, was directed instead by Bing (the default search engine used by Windows 10’s default Microsoft Edge browser) to a bogus website.

I just tried that and the first listing I got was

www.google.com/chrome

Im on IE6 (MyIE2 but it registers on sites as IE6 (Thats the engine I have))

In fact all the links on the page were on google.com mostly.......

I even copied the link under "Download Google Chrome" and went to it and got google.com/chrome

You're not using the Edge browser then, are you Dude? It's available only in Windows 10 anyway!

Default Bing Is Pushing Malware When You Search for Chrome

Hmmmm I just changed my useragent to look like MS EDGE and I went to bing and did the same thing and still got the same results.... (It did recognise me as being on edge)

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/39.0.2171.71 Safari/537.36 Edge/12.0

Maybe they removed the bad links now that its public.....

I don't know Dude. I don't have Edge. Anyway, as indicated in my 1st post*, the offending ad had already been removed by Microsoft, so you shouldn't have seen anything wrong.
