Fodder will be in short supply this Winter because a lot is being fed now and there isn't going to be much 2nd cut. And straw (for bedding or feed) isn't as plentiful as it normally is. All down to the weather. A lot of people buy store cattle later on, house them through the Winter in yards to finish them off ready for slaughter next year but if they haven't got the fodder or bedding they either aren't going to be able to do it or they will take less cattle through the Winter.

That then makes finished cattle in short supply next year ! It's all a gamble !

There's a fair bit of rain forecast for Friday but probably a case of too little, too late.

Yes, but we are told that it will be thunderstorms and torrential rain. That's not what's needed. We need steady rain for 12 hours, then a dry day for it to soak in, then another 12 hours of rain, and so on. This torrential stuff can't be absorbed as quick as it falls and so it just runs off.

If the rains did come now there would be a good Autumn flush of grass and that can be baled into silage or put in the clamp. It's always a bit dodgy trying to make it into hay in September, the days are shortening and the dews are heavier.

I'm a farmer and I'm moaning. Did you really expect anything different ? LOL
