Default Block Cryptocurrency Mining

This has been mentioned recently in issues 435 and 436 of WU. There's a comprehensive explanation of Cryptocurrency Miners on the How-To Geek site here:

Cryptocurrency Miners Explained: Why You Really Don’t Want This Junk on Your PC

There are various browser add-ons which will help to protect people from being exploited by Cryptocurrency Mining. Some have been shown in WU, but not everyone will have seen them:

For Opera or Vivaldi:

Mining Blocker extension - Opera add-ons

For Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi:

minerBlock - Chrome Web Store

For Firefox:

Mining Blocker – Add-ons for Firefox

NoMiner - Block Coin Miners – Add-ons for Firefox

NB. I don't know if these 2 are compatible with Firefox 57.0. If not, see the Pale Moon info below.

I couldn't find an add-on for Pale Moon, but I saw the following thread on one of their forums:

Miner blocker? - Pale Moon forum

In that thread, it suggests adding a filter subscription to your ad blocker:

Known Adblock Plus subscriptions

Scroll down to Miscellaneous>NoCoin, click "NoCoin" next to Subscribe and it will be added to your ad blocker. It will work in Adblock, ABP, ABL, uMatrix, uBlockO in whichever browser you're using.

In "Best Free Software" on page 29 of issue 435, there was a link to an anti-mining tool - Anti-WebMiner:

Releases · greatis/Anti-WebMiner · GitHub

This will block mining scripts by making a change to the Hosts file.

Hello,

Somehow we missed reading about this problem, though noticed some comment about it in this weeks edition of Web User.

We have done some searching, but still not found a clear answer to if Norton includes such protection or do we still need additional add ons ?

You're very welcome FratPark.

@ George

A good, up to date AV will help to protect you as you can see in the following aricle from Emsisoft:

Cryptocurrency mining malware | Emsisoft | Security Blog

The section headed How to prevent your device being hijacked for mining gives some good advice. They suggest getting the broeser extension No Coin which you can use in stead of any of those I mentioned in post #1 if you prefer. Links to No Coin for various browsers are given below:

For Opera or Vivaldi:

No Coin extension - Opera add-ons

For Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi:

No Coin - Block miners on the web! - Chrome Web Store

For Firefox:

No Coin – Add-ons for Firefox

This should be compatible with Firefox 57.0 - it doesn't say it isn't! The same applies to the 2 Firefox add-ons mentioned in post #1.

This article is from Symantec (Norton):

Adylkuzz Cryptocurrency Miner Is Not The Next WannaCry | Symantec Connect Community

this is the Microsoft Security Bulletin they refer to:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010 - Critical | Microsoft Docs

I think you will be adequately protected if you have an up to date AV installed and protect your browser(s) as shown above. Have a look at Anti-WebMiner too, it wouldn't do any harm to install it - you can always get rid of it if you don't like it or have any trouble with it.
