Default VPN stopping internet connection

I was doing something on my tablet (Android) through a VPN connection, and when I turned on my laptop (W10), it didn't automatically connect to the internet and I couldn't get onto the internet, even though the tablet connection was OK. In the end I had to reboot the router to get online.

Previously I've had the laptop connected and then turned on a vpn connection through the tablet and that's been fine.

Is this a known issue and is there a way round it? Many thanks!

You do not say which router you have. Try assigning a static ip address for the laptop.

I think this article is clearer on how to assign your laptop with a static IP address.

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/1924...-or-windows-7/

First though you will need to open a Command Prompt and enter ipconfig /all and make a note of the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway as they may be different to the article.

I'm with TT and my Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0

TalkTalk routers use 192.168.1.1 for their Default Gateway so you should be safe to assign 192.168.1.200 as the static IP address, otherwise you will need to contact TalkTalk to find out how to alter the DHCP range in your router and then assign the address outside of the DHCP range.

192.168.1.200 should be sufficiently far away so as not to cause a conflict with any other device that is connected.

It's pretty straight forward really.

Thanks. I'll have a look at that. I've found that if I connect to the internet on my laptop first and then turn the vpn on on my tablet, there isn't a problem.

It sounds like a DHCP conflict where the same IP addresses are being issued.

That is why Sb suggested assigning a static IP address to your computer.
