I saw this article, which has some useful info and advice, on the BT>Computing site:

How to fix problems with language settings in all versions of Windows - BT
If your computer thinks itís American and corrects your spelling accordingly, or your keyboard doesnít appear to be British, your language settings are to blame. Hereís how to fix them.
The article covers versions of Windows as follows:

Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8.1
Windows 10

Yes i've tried the obvious solution but it doesnt work. I hve been stuck with American on Windows 8.1

I am using Win 8.1

If you haven't done so already try this.

Control Panel>Language>Add Language>Select English>Double click and select English [United Kingdom]
