Another way to do it is to download colored folder icons (do a Google search for images).

Then right click the shortcut, click Properties, click Change Icon, and browse to one of the icon images you downloaded.

Always check for bundled unwanted extras when downloading and installing any new software and be sure to decline them.
Use custom install when itís available. Read all of every window before clicking.

Thanks so much to everyone for all the suggestions - I'm now spoiled for choice which is a great position to be in. Your video was really helpful, Moonshine - so idiotproof to follow (as always). I didn't realise how many apps there are available that will do what I want. Can't wait to get myself organised! Don't know what I would do without this forum.
