Is there any a particular SIM free ("unlocked"?) thing you have in mind?

It really does depend on the service providers in your area and also the number and type of base stations. Ask around and find recommendations. For example in my location I tried O2 (terrible) and T-Mobile (reasonable) before settling on 3, mainly because there are four high quality 3 base stations very near me.

I would mainly use the facility when travelling outside my area so national B/B coverage would be more relevant than local recommendations. I once did such an exercise for relations in Cambs looking for mobile B/B. It was claimed that 3 had the best coverage in rural areas - but terrible customer service which put us off them. I got an email from Giffgaff recently. They may be worth investigating if using a mobile, with/without the Belkin, is the only route to go - or are you saying that Giffgaff is only data, not audio?

any audio or video stream will eat into your data allowance whether you have a voice+data or data only tariff. Giffgaff is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) using the O2 network.

I appreciate your concerns about coverage as you travel around the country. If you can't rely on recommendations then you will have to resort to trial and error as I did.
