photo naming

I am using windows photo gallery to sort out my pics and would like to know if
there is a simple prog to enable me to put info on a pic like the early digital cam eras did ? this is so I can put asst hols in one folder and can identify them on screen.I know windows does it but my wife needs it more obvious !! any suggestions please regards tony (greenifan)
