It's still difficult to determine if that is a software or hardware problem.
You can buy replacement keyboards from Amazon etc for about ?20 -?30.
This is a guide to replacing a Toshiba laptop keyboard and may even differ slightly for even other Toshiba models, but the steps are probably generic for most laptops.

Giving it a good clean as suggested may loosen any debris. Has any liquid been spilled over the keyboard?
This problem can be caused if there is a loose connection between the keyboard cable and motherboard but this will entail opening up the laptop case - this is probably best done by your local repair shop if you do not feel confident about doing it.

Although I couldn't enter the password from the main keyboard, I was able to bring up the onscreen keyboard and enter the password using that. Once logged in I went through the alpha keys on word to find out where the problems were.

Gotcha but how were you able to get passed the password login to access that ?
