I have a Dell laptop and I have never heard of Dell System Detect. I think you can do without it.

What you should have is a programme called "My Dell" which you can use to scan your PC for problems and you can also check for driver updates.

If you do not have this go the Dell UK we site and search for "PC Doctor" (they produce My Dell). Under FAQ you will find a link where you can download the latest version of "My Dell".

I had to do this recently when I had a problem and it was easy to do.

Hope this helps.

You don't need it if you are happy to find and install your own updates. If you do want to install it then go to the Dell website Drivers & Download page and click on ?Analyze my system for updates? again to re-install Dell System detect and scan the system for driver updates.

FratPark, I don't have a programme called My Dell on my XP Desktop. When I searched for PC Doctor (Dell UK) there was no FAQ so couldn't get a link to download My Dell. I have Dell Accessories\Dell Driver Reset Tool which just came up with No error detected under the Diagnostics.

Thanks, it seems for me that the only option I have for getting updates is to insert my Dell's Tag - but the scan takes ages.

Hmmm Not having much luck I got the message - Analyze system for updates - We're sorry we were unable to analyze your system. Please return to the Drivers Home.

Try using a different browser.

Hi Sneaky, when you go into Windows Update/Custom/Hardware do you just get referred to the IE Dell Site?

I don't think so. I suspect it checks against Microsoft's own lists. DELL often uses modified drivers so you need to check on the DELL website for the latest drivers.
I do this for most of my drivers. Log in to the DELL drivers and downloads using your TAG and check the dates of drivers against the ones you already have installed.
There are some exceptions.
I never use the DELL NVidia Graphics card drivers as they are mostly (always) out of date. I load the latest direct from the Nvidia website.
